Set in a rural Anishinaabe community in northern Canada, it follows a group of community members after they are cut off from the rest of the world amidst a societal collapse. A sequel, Moon of the Turning Leaves, was published on October 10, 2023.

Even in these times of modern conveniences, Evan uses his knowledge of hunting to feed his family and provide a reliable source of healthy food.. Moon of the Crusted Snow is an allegorical retelling of European settlers' colonization of the Americas, and how that colonization has impacted First Nations cultures over the last few centuries. In the novel, outsiders infiltrate and destabilize an Anishinaabe community, a situation that alludes to Europeans who settled in First Nations territory in the 1500s and 1600s.
